Campaign against liquor has to go on: Sudheeran

Says struggle against social evils a continuous process

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president V.M. Sudheeran has said that the campaign against liquor has to go forward and those involved in it need not be disheartened by temporary setbacks which are part of all such struggles.

He was speaking at a get-together organised here on Friday by the district committee of the Jamaat Council on the eve of Milad-i-Sherif.

“There has been criticism from some quarters over the liquor policy. All those are part of such movements.

Any well-intentioned act has to face setbacks. Sometimes, there will be a few drawbacks too. But there is no cause to get disheartened over that. I have confidence that we will be able to attain our goal of a liquor-free society in the future,” said Mr. Sudheeran.

He said that the struggle against social evils was a continuous process and so the only option was to move forward. This was not an issue of religion, caste or politics, but one concerning the lives of the common man. A collective effort was required in this and the fight was not going to be easy, he said.

“When I started this struggle, many of my friends and acquaintances familiar with this field had told me that this will lead to nothing. But we have been able to prove that reducing accessibility is the best way to reduce consumption of liquor.

As a result, accidents, especially that of two-wheelers, have decreased and domestic violence has also reduced,” he said.
