Financial independence is not enough for women empowerment. Position of women in society and their dignity need to be ensured, Kerala State Women’s Commission chairperson M.C. Josephine has said.
She was delivering the inaugural address at the commemoration of the centenary of YWCA at VJT Hall here on Thursday.
Tracing the evolution of feminism and women empowerment, Ms. Josephine said strong steps were needed to ensure space for women in society. “Women should be politically empowered, especially in today’s times,” she said. The commission could be approached by any woman at any time for justice, she said.

Lauding the efforts of YWCA in strengthening women’s position in society, she said it should work with women to ensure that society changed in a way that women’s dignity was protected. Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Shobha Koshy delivered the centenary oration. YWCA national president Shakuntala David, YWCA district president Reana Thomas, advisory committee member Jacob Punnoose, general secretary Daphne Lean, and centenary committee president Rani Sarah Thomas were present.
