‘Betrayal Day,’ 2 years after plant’s closure

December 22, 2013 05:03 pm | Updated 05:03 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

‘Betrayal Day’ was observed by the councillors of the Left Democratic Front of the city Corporation here on Saturday, on the occasion of the second anniversary of closure of the Vilappilsala waste treatment plant.

Since December 21, 2011, the State government had been promising the Corporation steps to set up modern waste treatment plants.

“Two years have passed, and the government is yet to take a decision in this regard,” said V. Sivankutty, MLA, who inaugurated a Secretariat march. Councillors, Corporation officials, and members of residents’ associations took part in the march.

A press release from the Corporation blamed the government for being apathetic to the city’s plight. The Corporation is doing all it can to prevent a crisis, the release added, by setting up decentralised biogas plants. The government needs to accord top priority to setting up centralised units as they promised to do so two years ago, Mayor K. Chandrika said.
