Attacks on doctors: accused arrested

A youth, who manhandled a doctor who questioned his taking photos of patients at the Government Medical College Hospital here, was arrested on Tuesday by the Medical College police.

The police, who identified the accused as Visakh, 27, of Peringamala, said he had reached the hospital around 11.30 p.m. on Sunday along with a friend who was injured in a road accident. Visakh allegedly started shooting videos on his mobile phone of patients, which was objected to by a doctor. Visakh, the police said, retaliated by attacking the doctor and manhandling him. He was produced before court and remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Rajpal Meena, SP, Thiruvananthapuram (Rural), said one person was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the attack on duty doctors at the Vellanad community health centre (CHC) on Saturday.

The accused, Sreekandan, 55, Mr. Meena said, was part of a group of around 10 Congress activists, led by Vellanad grama panchayat president Vellanad Sashi, who manhandled the doctors. Mr. Sashi and the others accused the doctors of referring patients to the medical college hospital. Sreekandan was remanded in judicial custody, Mr. Meena said.
