An additional sub-inspector, P. Varghese, attached to the Kovalam police station, has been suspended, pending inquiry, in connection with an incident on April 16, in which wanted criminal Karate Johnny stabbed three policemen who were attempting to nab him.

V.J. Jophy, Circle Inspector, Vizhinjam, said Varghese had accompanied the three civil police officers after they got an alert from the Circle Inspector, Poovar, that Johnny was spotted in a bar near Kovalam. However, Varghese, who knew Johnny, allegedly stepped aside and remained a mute spectator when the other three policemen tried to nab Johnny and they came under attack. Further, he allegedly did not help in shifting the injured policemen to hospital.

Police officers said Varghese had failed to alert the Police Control Room or his superior officers before going out to nab Johnny. It is also said that he did not warn the civil police officers of Johnny’s history of attacking policemen.
