The City police, during a pre-Republic Day (RD) combing operation in the city, nabbed around 1,200 persons, including six absconders, 204 persons against whom arrest warrants were pending, and 83 persons accused in various cases.
Those arrested included Deepu, alias ‘Mass,’ 30, of Kazhakuttam, who was absconding for the past three years after snatching Rs.10,000 from a shopkeeper. Sheen Tharayil, Circle Inspector, Medical College, said Deepu was living incognito as an ambulance driver with a private hospital in the city. His accomplices in the offence — Shibu, alias ‘Peeli’ Shibu, 35, and Pradeep, 30, – had been arrested earlier, Mr. Tharayil said.
He was produced before court and remanded in judicial custody. City Police Commissioner H. Venkatesh said in a statement that over 1,500 vehicles were inspected during the combing and 59 persons were held on charges of drunk driving.

Over 750 lodges were inspected while dog squads and anti-sabotage wings were examining railway stations, bus stations, and the airport premises.
On Republic Day, Governor P. Sathasivam will hoist the National Flag and review the parade at 8.30 a.m. at the Central Stadium. Twenty platoons, including those of the Army, Air Force, Border Security Force, Central Industrial Security Force, Railway Protection Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Special Armed Police, Armed Reserve Police, India Reserve Battalion, Kerala Fire and Rescue Services, Excise, Prisons Department, National Cadet Corps, Student Police Cadets, and the Bharat Scouts and Guides will participate in the parade. The Mounted Police and three bands, including that of the Army, will perform. The security arrangements will be overseen by Mr. Venkatesh, one Commandant, 11 Assistant Commissioners, 15 Circle Inspectors, 60 sub-inspectors, and over 500 police officials.
