Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who arrived in the State capital on Monday to assume charge as the new Governor, was met with a protest by the Thiruvananthapuram unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which held a candlelight vigil at Vellayambalam.

The vigil, held under tight security by the city police, was led by Ajit Joy, the AAP’s proposed candidate from Thiruvananthapuram in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections; T. Sugathan, the party’s Thiruvananthapuram convener; and Prasad Somarajan, the campaign manager for the Thiruvananthapuram constituency.

Mr. Joy said around 200 people participated in the protest. The protest was peaceful, and would continue in the form of written statements to the President, demanding the withdrawal of the order appointing Ms. Dikshit as the Governor.

Mr. Joy said Ms. Dikshit was an accused in six corruption cases. The AAP suspected the move to be part of an “attempt to grant constitutional protection to Ms. Dikshit from the corruption cases.”
