Over 700 booked by traffic police

Over 4,000 motor vehicles were checked by the traffic police in the city limits as part of the intensive traffic enforcement drive Operation Safety that began on Monday.

As many as 700 motorists have been booked for various traffic offences that include speeding, jumping signals, driving two-wheelers without helmets, driving motor cars without wearing seat belts, and use of mobile phones.

Rash driving

As many as 20 motorcyclists were booked for rash driving in various parts of the city.

Of the offenders, 50 per cent were let off with warning during the drive that is being carried out in the main carriageways, other corridors, and bylanes.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Traffic, North, T. Mohanan Nair said the number of those booked (700) on the first day of the drive was surprising, as the traffic wing normally nets 200 on an average for various traffic offences.
