No MBBS admissions at Parippally, Idukki colleges

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has disapproved the State government’s proposal to start the ESI Corporation Medical College at Paripally this academic year by opening up admissions for 100 MBBS seats. The MCI has also denied permission to the State to admit students in 2016-17 to the third batch of MBBS course (50 seats) to the Government Medical College, Idukki. It has, however, given permission to admit the fourth batch of MBBS students (100 seats) at the Manjeri Government Medical College and the third batch (100 seats) at the Government Medical College, Palakkad.

It has permitted the government to increase the intake of students from 200 to 250 to the new MBBS admissions in 2016-17 at the Government Medical College, Kozhikode, and from 100 to 150 at the TD Government Medical College, Alappuzha.

It was earlier in the month that the government took the sudden decision to request MCI’s permission to start the ESIC Medical College at Parippally so that 100 government MBBS seats can be made available this academic year. The government had moved quickly to fulfil all the necessary infrastructural requirements needed for starting the first year and had transferred faculty posts from Konni and the proposed new medical college at the capital to make up for faculty shortage.

The government had earlier taken a policy decision that the proposed new medical college at Thiruvananthapuram on the General Hospital campus with 100 MBBS seats will not be launched this year.

Among the private self-financing medical colleges, the MCI has denied permission to the following institutions to make fresh MBBS admissions this academic year (2016-17).

P.K. Das Institute of Medical Sciences (3rd batch,150 seats); Al Azhar Medical College and Super-Specialty Hospital (3rd batch, 150 seats); Mount Zion Medical College, Pathanamthitta (3rd batch, 100 seats); and D.M. Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences (4th batch, 150 seats). The MCI has approved the application of the Believers’ Church Trust, Kuttapuzha, Thiruvalla, to open a new private self-financing medical college at Kuttapuzha.
