Gita Gopinath, Professor of International Studies and Economics, Harvard University, has been appointed economic adviser to the Chief Minister.
A native of Mysore, Ms. Gopinath specialises in international finance and macroeconomics. She completed her degree in Economics from Lady Shri Ram College, New Delhi, winning the President’s gold medal before doing her Masters at the Delhi School of Economics. She moved to the US for a Ph.D. and was an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago for four years from 2001 before joining Harvard University.
The first Indian after Nobel laureate Amartya Sen to be named tenured professor at the Economics Department, Harvard University, she is currently John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics.

Ms. Gopinath has been a member of the eminent persons’ advisory group on G-20 matters in the Ministry of Finance, India during 2013-14 and a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston since 2009. She has also been a member of the economic advisory panel, Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Faculty Associate, Weatherhead Centre for International Affairs.
An official pressnote issued here said the post of economic advisor had been made co terminus with the government.
