Globalisation hindershuman rights: expert

While socialism has paved way for human rights in the historical context, the advent of globalisation has hindered its growth, according to Samuel Moyn, Professor of Law and History, Harvard University.

He was delivering the keynote address at the three-day international interdisciplinary seminar on ‘Impact of globalisation on Human Rights’ at the Department of Law at the University of Kerala on Thursday.

Unequal wealth

Dr. Moyn elaborated on the extent of inequality in distribution of wealth in the era of globalisation.

Pointing out that inequality is on the rise in India, Dr. Moyn said the sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean witnessed a different trend. These regions have seen increasing equality during the period between 1990 and 2013, he said, quoting a study.

Inaugurating the seminar, National Law School of India University Vice Chancellor R. Venkata Rao cautioned that globalisation has gradually led to countries drifting towards unilateralism. Pointing out that there was growing unrest within societies that were becoming fragmented, Dr. Rao stressed on the need to overcome differences through dialogue.
