Even as close to 14,000 merit seats in private self-financing engineering colleges are lying vacant, there appears to be a robust demand for regular arts and science courses in colleges affiliated to the University of Kerala.
According to data sourced from the university, 78,882 candidates have registered online and submitted course-college options for admission to the first-year degree programme in affiliated colleges. The total number of undergraduate seats available in all the colleges is about 30,000. Of these, 20,030 seats are allotted by the university. The rest of the seats falls under the management, community and certain categories of sports quota.
The highest number of options have been registered for the B.Sc. courses — 5,50,052. While 4,85,208 candidates have signed up for the various BA courses in the varsity, 2,11,127 candidates have submitted course-college options for the B.Com. courses. As many as 20,366 candidates have submitted course-college options for other degree courses.

If the number of options submitted by candidates is any indicator of the popularity of a course, the BA English course comes out of top: as many as 1,32,331 options have been submitted for this course. While 1,09,598 options have been submitted for the BA Economics course, 1,03,241 options have been submitted for the B.Sc. Physics course. For B.Sc. Zoology 98,363 options have been registered and for the B.Sc. Chemistry course 94,267 options have been registered.
Going by the number of options submitted, the University College, Thiruvananthapuram appears to be the most popular choice of the students: 96,389 options have been submitted for various courses in this college. SN College, Kollam, has had 82,356 options submitted for it while MG College, Thiruvananthapuram, has had 71,192 options submitted for its various courses. While the Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, has had 50,034 options submitted for its courses, as many as 45,300 options have been submitted for various courses in TKM College, Kollam.
After the fourth round of allotment, as colleges are moving towards spot admission, there are 7,861 seats unfilled in the varsity. Of these 655 seats are in government colleges, 2,617, in aided colleges and 4,589, in self-financing colleges. While 2,114 seats in the Scheduled Caste category are vacant, 1,463 seats in the ST category are lying vacant in various colleges.
