The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) will take strict action against drivers of Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses and other vehicles that park haphazardly at East Fort.

Cancellation of licences

Officials of the department will take measures such as cancellation of licence of drivers of vehicles that stop and park in a haphazard manner, a statement from Regional Transport Officer A.P. Asok Kumar said on Monday.

Haphazard parking of vehicles on the road often led to accidents. These also resulted in long traffic snarls. Buses should stop at East Fort only to pick up passengers. However, it had come to notice that the buses kept idling there for long. Drivers were also in the habit of stopping on the road, without entering the bus bay, the statement said.

The intervention from the MVD comes in the wake of the death of a 56-year-old woman after she was run over by a bus at East Fort on Sunday evening. Sulochana of Pappanamcode was killed when she was trying to cross the road.
