Yenepoya Foundation gives away scholarships

Students who won scholarships given by Yenepoya Foundation to pursue academics told The Hindu that they would use the money to supplement the fees for their studies.

The Yenepoya Foundation, a unit of YMK Memorial Educational and Charitable Trust and Yenepoya University awarded scholarships to 308 students from 16 institutions in the city on Saturday, said a press release. The scholarships, which are awards for academic excellence, are given every year to students excelling in SSLC, PUC, and undergraduate degree exams to motivate them.

From those who got the scholarships in the degree category, Niha Abdul Rahiman Sheikh, who is studying for her masters in analytical Chemistry in St. Aloysius College, said she would use the money from the scholarship to fund the fees (Rs.1.2 lakh) for her course. She said she would like to become a lecturer in the subject.

In the PUC category, Ummer Shaneef said that he was attending coaching classes as he wanted to study chartered accountancy. “The fee is pending so I will use the scholarship money for it,” he said. Pallavi Rao, studying in first year PUC with the PCMS (physics, chemistry, maths and statistics) combination, was one of the students who got the scholarship in the SSLC category. K. Manjunath Rao, her father, said he had put the scholarship money she had received in her bank account. He said it would be used for funding her studies as she wants to do engineering.

The scholarships each of Rs. 3,000 are given to students studying in minority educational institutions with 100 per cent results at the SSLC, PUC, and undergraduate levels. Non-minority students may apply for the scholarships provided they belonged to economically backward category. In addition to the scholarships, free seats were given to students on the basis of merit and means. These were given to five students pursuing Bachelor in Dental Studies (BDS), five students pursuing MBBS, three students for Master of Physiotherapy (MPT), three students for Bachelor in Physiotherapy (BPT), three for BSc (Nursing) and two for and General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM).

U.T. Khader, guest of honour, who gave away the scholarships, said students must make use of the support they got through scholarships.
