Udupi to host five-day folk arts festival

24 teams from 20 states to give folk dance performances

The Sri Krishna Math will organise a five-day national festival of folk arts at Rajangana from September 25 to 29.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Madhwesh Tantri, Cultural Secretary of Paryaya Sode Math, said 24 folk teams (from 20 states) would perform at the festival. The aim of the festival was to make the younger generation aware of the rich tradition of folk dances in the country.

Folk dances that would be performed during the festival are: Bihu dance (Assam), Raas Nritya (Nagaland), Manipuri classical dance, Bhavia Ghoomer, Kalbelia (Rajasthan), Gotipova (Odisha), Jodi Shunk (Chattisgarh), Sambalpuri (Jharkhand), Bedary (Madhya Pradesh), Lavani (Maharashtra), Sidhigoma tribal dance (Gujarat), Lambaani, Koya tribal dance (Andhra Pradesh), Karagam, Kaavadi, Uliyu (Tamil Nadu), Bhangra (Punjab), Gidda (Haryana), Holi (Uttar Pradesh), Deepam Nritya (Goa), Roof Dance (Jammu and Kashmir), Kalaripayatt (Kerala), Pooja Kunitha, Yellamma Jogi Nritya, and Gurgi-Gurgi Malerayana (Karnataka).

Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math will inaugurate the festival on September 25. Vidayasagara Tirtha Swamiji of Krishnapur Math and Vishwavallabha Tirtha Swamiji of Paryaya Sode Math would be present during the inaugural function, Mr. Tantri said.
