The new building of the District Government Maternity and Children’s Hospital would come up on two-and-a-half acres of land at the doctors’ quarters’ area of the hospital next to T.A. Pai Hindi Bhavan here.
Addressing presspersons after inspecting the area, Mr. Madhwaraj said that the proposed plot was slightly away from the Kavi Muddanna Road, the main street of the city, and therefore would be considerably quiet.
The present building on the Kavi Muddanna Road has become dilapidated and its proximity to the bustling city centre made it a victim of noise pollution.

The new two-storey building was estimated to cost Rs. 13.6 crore and would have 170 beds, up 100 from the strength at the present hospital. The new building would have an outpatient department, one major operation theatre, a labour room, an X-ray room, a modern laboratory, a room for ultra sound machine, and a pharmacy store. It would have both lift and staircase facility. It would also have a parking facility. There would also be provision for future expansion.
Mr. Madhwaraj said the doctors’ quarters would be shifted to the place where the present hospital building was located. Some office rooms might also come up in the place where the present hospital building was located. The new hospital building, if required, would be linked to the old hospital area through an underpass.

The MLA also directed the officials to fix the leaking roof at the existing hospital building.
