Udupi CMC to seek Rs. 5 crore for new roads

President of the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) Kiran Kumar said on Friday that the CMC had prepared a proposal of Rs. 5 crore to construct new roads and asphalt the existing roads for the Paryaya festival in January 2011. He was speaking at the general body meeting of the CMC, here.

Mr. Kumar said that a delegation from the CMC would submit this proposal to the Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda shortly and seek funds from the government. Rains had damaged a lot of property in the city. The CMC had urged the district administration to allot Rs. 3.10 crore to them, he said.

Councillor M.R. Pai said that many road accidents occurred at the Kalsanka Junction on Udupi-Manipal Road. There was no footpath to this road, he said.

Councillor Mohan Upadhya said that some accidents had taken place near MGM College on the same road. Vehicles were speeding after road-widening.

A circle should be constructed or a traffic signal should be installed in these places, he said.

Intervening, Mr. Kumar said that the CMC would write to the Road Safety Committee on this issue.

He would speak to the Traffic Inspector on installing signal lights.

The CMC already had a proposal to construct a circle at Kalsank. The CMC would construct humps on the cross roads, he said.

Mahesh Thakur, Councillor, said that many petty shops were coming up in Manipal without licences. Mr. Kumar said that the CMC had decided in its last meeting not to give permission to any petty shop.

But some petty shops had come up on private land near City bus stand, he said.

Mr. Upadhya said that some plumbers were giving illegal water connection in the city. Mr. Kumar said that the CMC had formed a squad to find out such connections. The CMC was encouraging all houses to have direct tap water connection.

There would be no public taps in the city after October 30, he said.

Mr. Jayananda, Councillor, said that the government had decided to ask the local bodies to increase water tariffs. But if the proposal of the government was accepted, people would have to pay steep tariffs, he said.

Revision

Mr. Kumar said that any revision of water tariffs would be done only after discussing it in the Council.

CMC vice-president Bharati Chandrashekhar, CMC Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak, and Udupi Tahsildar V. Prasanna were present.
