The Department of Forests has plans to plant two lakh saplings across the district in the coming year, district in-charge Minister J. Krishna Palemar said here on Monday.
Speaking at a Vanamahotsava programme organised by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, the Department of Forests, and the Department of Public Instruction, the Minister said of the total saplings, 13,000 would be planted under the Karavali Kavacha Yojane. A total of 20,000 saplings would be planted within the Mangalore City Corporation limits.
He said there was a plan to develop five new parks in the city and they would be a “model for the country”.

Deputy Conservator of Forests O. Palayya said that 100 acres of land had been identified for “devara vana” at Uppinangady. Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda said Thannirbhavi and Panambur beaches would soon be made plastic-free, and violators would be fined Rs. 500. Certificates and cash prizes were given to the winners of competitions organised to mark the occasion. Saniha K. from Ramakrishna High School in Puttur taluk won the first place in the competition for Yuva Vijnana Prashasti. Pramod N.V., also from the same school, stood second. Abhishek Ratan Kumar won the third place.
