Tulu academy to release UG textbook today

The Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy that succeeded in getting Tulu included as an optional language in undergraduate courses of Mangalore University will release ‘Siri Dompa: Tudar Onji’ the textbook for the first semester on Monday.

Academy president A.C. Bhandary said on Friday that with the help of its editorial board, the academy was able to bring out the textbook quickly as the university would introduce the language from the current academic year.

University Vice-Chancellor P.S. Yadapadithaya would release the book on the premises at Urva Store at 3.30 p.m. while academy founding president B.A. Vivek Rai would introduce it.

Mr. Bhandary said over 2,500 students have been studying Tulu as the third language in primary and high schools in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The first batch of high school students taht had taken Tulu as the third language in 2012-13 had completed SSLC in 2014-15. So far, 1,361 students from five SSLC batches have completed their study in Tulu.

Mr. Bhandary congratulated the university, its V-C, officials, textbook committee chairman B. Shivarama Shetty, executive editor Poovappa Kaniyur and members, for introducing Tulu.

He was confident that the Pre University Education Department would introduce Tulu for PU classes from the next academic year following the academy’s representation to the Chief Minister in this regard.
