The much-awaited full-fledged synthetic track is nearing completion. Though the project is running behind the schedule by nearly a year, it is set to be completed by May.
It was in January last year that the work was allotted to Delhi-based sports infrastructure company Syncotts International at a cost of Rs. 3.15 crore. The firm was given time of four months to complete the work. The government sanctioned Rs. 40 lakh for creation of additional facilities to allow competitions on both sides of the track.
So far, the firm has completed laying synthetic layer (a combination of black and red rubber granules) above the 400-metre asphalted track. They have also made provision for two D areas on the both sides of the track for conducting pole vault, discus, shotput and javelin events. The track can also store water for decathlon. A separate track has been laid for long jump and triple jump.

Work is on to lay fence around the track. Officials overseeing the work said the firm has to level the synthetic track. A UK firm will be called to mark the tracks. The officials said the work will be over by May.
The work of laying the synthetic track started in April last year.
