Targeting students who want to pursue higher studies abroad, and throwing light on the scholarship opportunities for students from here to study in universities in United States, ‘Experience America’, an outreach programme of the US Consulate General, was launched at the St. Aloysius College here on Friday.
Apart from catalogue display and guidance on entrance into nine universities such as Hawaii Pacific University, West Virginia University, Central Michigan University, information was also dispensed about American Library and fellowships such as the ‘Fulbright classroom teacher exchange program for Indian schoolteachers (Class VI to IX) of English, maths or science’.
Apart from this, the events at St. Aloysius College included an inter-collegiate speech competition for college students on ‘India’s emerging regional role in South and Central Asia’; a seminar on ‘higher education in the U.S. and student visas’; and a quiz on U.S. for high school students.

Calling the Indian diaspora in America as an “influential and vibrant community”, U.S. Minister Counsellor for Commercial Affairs Judy Reinke, who inaugurated the event in the college, said: “The partnerships between our people and businesses stretch back for generations, and the Indian community there has played a valuable role as a bridge between our cultures and has helped transform US-India relations. And the best way of furthering this was to build people-to-people relationships.”
‘Experience America’ in Mangalore, and later Manipal, would be an opportunity for the consulate to reach out to people outside of the capital cities, and especially in areas that are education hubs, she said.

On Saturday, the event will shift to City Centre mall, where quizzes, poetry, seminars on American landmarks and personalities will be held, and finally culminating in the Ice-Cream eating contest.
