The sunny atmosphere at her schoolground inspired 12-year-old Hani H.R. to start a ‘green army’ of children who are inspiring residents of Jeppinamogaru to plant saplings of fruit-bearing trees on their vacant plots.

This student of St. Agnes School, Bendoorwell and Annu Nayak from Belthangady were among those who were felicitated on Wednesday for their contribution to greenery in the district.

This felicitation was part of the World Environment Day programme in the city.

Ms. Hani, a native of Chikkamagaluru, said that she learnt about global warming owing to the axing of trees.

“It was then I decided to take up the task of planting trees in the neighbourhood.” As there was no space for planting saplings in the rented house they were staying, she decided to go to houses with vacant plots for planting tree saplings.

“Our green army started with five members. Now we have good number of children,” she said.
