The potholes on the Shiradi Ghat stretch of the busy Bangalore-Mangalore National Highway will be filled by January 31, said Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Oscar Fernandes here on Monday.
He was speaking to reporters after conducting a meeting with Public Works Department Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, Minister in-charge of Dakshina Kannada B. Ramanath Rai, Minister for Health and Family Welfare U.T. Khader and officials from the State and Union governments.
Mr. Fernandes said the work of filling potholes has already started. The repair work will be carried out in a transparent manner.

The Union government has sanctioned Rs. 95 crore for rebuilding the 47km stretch after filling up the potholes, he said.
“Rebuilding the stretch will require 18 months to complete. We have already written a letter to the Forest Minister to issue permission for a quarry to supply materials for the road work. The Minister in turn has agreed positively,” he said.

Repair work on the Charmadi Ghat on the Mangalore-Chikmagalur road was under progress, he added.
A detailed feasibility report was being prepared for the proposed underpass at the Nanthoor Circle (in the city) for which the Union government has sanctioned Rs. 40 crore and Rs. 22 crore had been sanctioned for widening the service roads at some stretches between B.C. Road and Surathkal.
PWD Minister Mr. Mahadevappa said the Union government has released, under the Central Road Fund, Rs. 1,800 crore for taking up road works in the State.
