Several students took part in the demonstration of the Students’ Federation of India, Dakshina Kannada unit on Wednesday for a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the rape and murder of 17-year-old girl in Dharmastala.
Addressing the protestors, Nitin Kuttar, SFI District unit secretary, said harassment and assault on women were tarnishing the image of Dakshina Kannada district. He said it had been two months since the murder of the 17-year-old girl and the police were yet to nab the culprits. “The real persons involved in the attack yield lot of authority. The government is worried over the likely political backlash if real persons are arrested,” he said.

The 17-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Ujire on October 9. The Belthangady police arrested 34-year-old Sanjeev Rao for his alleged involvement in the rape and murder. Following agitations and demonstrations demanding arrest of real persons, the State government handed over the investigation to the Criminal Investigation Department.
The students on Wednesday said a CBI investigation alone would bring out real facts related to the rape and murder of the 17-year-old girl. The delay in arresting the real persons was creating fear among girls attending schools and colleges in Dharmasthala, they alleged.
