‘Set apart funds for RTE in State Budget'

A protest against the failure to enforce the Right to Education (RTE) was held in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday.

It was organised by the School Development Management Committees (SDMCs), Campaign Against Child Labour (CACL), and Shikshana Sampanna Moola Kendra Okkoota.

The Government had not evolved guidelines for implementation of RTE, they said. This was causing confusion in schools and aggravating the menace of capitation fees.

“We are insisting on keeping some amount of money in the budget for implementation of RTE. Otherwise, it will take another year,” said Renny D'Souza, District Convenor, Dakshina Kannada, CACL.

He said the RTE had no infrastructure for its implementation and it was important to implement the RTE, to frame rules for its implementation and set apart a budget for it. If not in the budget, some other arrangements should be made.

“Nothing was being done in this regard despite many agitations. In October last year, we sent a similar memorandum. But there was no sign of any step taken on this matter,” he said.
