School starts night classes in Puttur

February 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - MANGALURU:

Taking cue from the experiment in Government Secondary School in Eerde-Upparige village in Puttur taluk, an aided school in Darbe Puttur has commenced night classes for slow learners appearing for class 10 examination, from Tuesday.

The School Development and Monitoring Committee of the Government Secondary School in Eerde-Upparige village began the initiative from February 20, as part of ‘Mission 95 +’. This in turn is an initiative by the Puttur educational block to ensure that more than 95 per cent of students passed the examination. All government and aided schools of the block have been involved in the Mission.

Oswald Rodrigues, the Head Master of St. Philomena High School, said a third of the 300 students were attending the night classes from Tuesday. “Earlier, this initiative was taken by teachers in their classroom. But this time we are collectively working with slow learners,” Mr. Rodrigues said.

Ten teachers will work with the students for nearly a month. They will make use of ‘Daari Deepa’, a booklet prepared by the Mission 95 + team that contains questions from six subjects that the students needed to prepare.

Mr. Rodrigues said that after the school hours, the students would take a brief break and return to the class around 6 p.m. Two subjects will be taken for the first two hours every day. After a break for dinner, students will be tested on their understanding between 8.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. Two teachers will be deputed each day, Mr. Rodrigues said.

The school management has arranged for breakfast and dinner for students. “We are happy to be associated with the work that builds confidence of slow learners,” said Prakash Montero, Campus Director of St. Philomena Institutions, and added that many of these students did not have the atmosphere to study in their houses.
