Plays presented by students of Rosario College and Alva’s College on Tuesday matched each other in visual effects, sound and characterisation on the second day of the Mangalore University’s Inter-Collegiate Cultural Festival.
While the former presented a story on hunger, the later staged a play from the Mahabharata.
The plays staged by Rosario College and Alva’s College students stood out for their quality among the performances on Tuesday.

The play of Rosario College students was based on Kum. Veerabhadrappa’s Devara Hena (Corpse of God) that portrays struggle for livelihood of a labourer and his family from a backward community. The highlight of the play was the performance by lead actor Naushad, who excelled in the role of labourer, who struggles to make ends meet.
Ninasam graduated Christopher, who directed the play, made good use “chande”, “dhol” and “tabla” to give effect to the play.
The Alva’s College team staged “Doota Vakya”, based on Sanskrit play written by Bhasa on an episode from the Mahabharata.

The highlight of the play directed by Jeevanram Sullia was the use of backdrops that also donned the roles such as Dushyasana and Bheeshmacharya.
Yakshagana dance steps and “chende” were used excellently.
Gazals and Kannada songs presented by students in the light vocal competition held at the MBA Seminar Hall impressed the audience.
The turnout was poor on Tuesday too.
