A reporter of a local fortnightly was killed when a bus rammed into his motorcycle near Vakvady bridge at Vakvady village near Kundapur Tuesday night.
Kundapur traffic police said the reporter, Vishnu Shettigar (29), died on the spot. He was going from Korgi to Koteshwar, when the bus coming from the opposite direction hit the motorcycle around 7.45 p.m. on Tuesday. The bus driver fled from the scene and was absconding, police said. Rash and negligent driving by the bus driver is said to the cause of the accident.

The Mangalore immigration branch police on Wednesday arrested a ship engineer for illegal possessing $26,500 at the New Mangalore Port Trust. According to police, Jitendra Kumar Sabarwal (45), a ship engineer in the March Vamdev ship, declared $170 at the time of sign up (when his duty ends). Mr. Sabarwal did not have any explanation for possessing $26,500. The immigration officers arrested Mr. Sabarwal for violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act. The ship brought LPG from Dubai on Oct. 8.
Driver hurt in accident
A 32-year-old van driver was seriously injured after his vehicle was hit head-on by a private city bus near Mogavirpatna on Wednesday. Ullal police said Mohammed Sharief was returning after delivering a load of fish when the bus going to Kotepura collided with the van. A part of Sharief’s right hand was severed, police said. Sharief was being treated at a hospital near Kadri Mallikatta.

Traffic on the Mangalore-Kasaragod highway was affected for two hours after a private bus hit a truck on Nethravati bridge Wednesday morning. Nobody was injured in the incident.
