‘Raising voice near polling station punishable’

Raising voice at the entrance of the polling station and nearby private and public places, using of loudspeakers near the station, coming in the way of poll duty of officials, and preventing any voter from visiting the booth are punishable offences, M.L. Vyshali, Additional Deputy Commissioner, said here on Tuesday.

Such acts are punishable under Section 131, Representation of the People Act, 1951. An individual violating this section could be jailed for three months, could be fined or could be jailed and fined together, she told reporters.

She said that the ink mark after polling would be applied to the index finger in the left hand.

The government has declared May 12 as holiday for all establishments to enable all employees to vote. The Election Officer would take a call on whether holiday should be declared to such educational institutes or government offices for preparatory works for setting up polling booths on May 11.

Ms. Vyshali said that the control room in the office of Deputy Commissioner will check whether all flying squad teams and static surveillance teams are functioning effectively, especially during the last 72 hours to polling.

She said that of 225 complaints received regarding violation of model code of conduct, except nine cases other complaints have been disposed of. Cases have been registered on 24 complaints.

The officials have seized nine vehicles.
