Prove your majority, JD(U) challenges Sadananda

March 13, 2012 01:32 pm | Updated 01:32 pm IST - Udupi:

Janata Dal (United) State unit president M.B. Nadagouda said on Monday that Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda should call a meeting of Legislature Party of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to check whether he enjoyed the support of a majority of legislators.

Mr. Nadagouda said the followers of the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa were claiming in the media that he enjoyed the support of 60 legislators and 12 Ministers. There had been uncertainty for the last two months by such claims. Mr. Gowda should call a meeting of the legislature party to test the loyalty of the legislators. If he had the majority, it would put an end to all speculation. If not, he should resign.

The infighting in the BJP and prolonged period of uncertainty had led to a collapse of administration in the State. Ever since the BJP came to power about three-and-a-half years ago, it had not been able to provide proper governance. But the Opposition parties such as the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) had failed to focus on the misdeeds of the Government.

The failure of parties such as the Congress, the BJP, and the JD (S) had led to widespread disillusionment in the State. The people wanted an alternative to these parties. Hence the JD (U) had been planning to form a Fourth Front in the State. This front would comprise the JD(U), other political parties, and the youth. Since the JD(U) was holding talks with various other parties, it would not like to name them.

The JD(U) candidate for Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha seat K. Bharat said that there was an internal agreement between the BJP and the JD (S). “But I will win by a margin of 25,000 to 30,000 votes,” he said.
