Incessant rains outside provided a perfect ambience to college students who offered presentation of poems of well-known Kannada authors. The renderings made in the Sugam Sangeeta section stood out in the annual inter-collegiate music competition held on Thursday.
The competition was organised by the Karavali Sangeeta Kalavidara Okkuta. Nearly 200 degree and engineering students from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada participated in the competition. Apart from Sugam Sangeeta, there were competitions in instrumental, patriotic songs and film song categories.
The highlight of the Sugam Sangeeta segment was the presentations made by Savita and Rakshata Nayak of N.S. Laxminarayana Bhat’s composition ‘Estu Kaala Ottigiddu Estu Beretaroo …’ The two presented it in their own style as the essence of the song related to the internal turmoil between two lovers. While Ms. Savita sang solo, Ms. Nayak from MGM College Udupi presented it with her college mate Ajit on tabla, who earlier gave a solo presentation in instrumental section of the competition.

Audience appreciated presentation of ‘Ella Ninna Leele Taye Ella Ninna Maye…’ by Vishnavi. This was followed by presentation of ‘Besaragide Maatu Bharavagide Mauna’ by Krupa Shetty from Alvas Engineering College, followed by ‘Munisu Tarave Mugude Hitavaagi…’ by Pavan from Govindadas College; and Karavali College student Manasa’s presentation of ‘Godhooli Lagnaka Itta …” The segment ended on a high note with a presentation of ‘Nee Sigade Baalondu …’ by Sushmita Rao from Sahyadri College. Each student was given five minutes to present.
Earlier, five students took part in the instrumental music competition. Abin played a composition in the keyboard, Swati P.K. from Canara First Grade College played veena. There were solo presentations by Abhishek P. from Alvas College on the violin and Ajit on tabla respectively.
The children of the Okkuta presented a group song, while a music team from Hubli entertained audience with old film songs in the evening.

The Okkuta distributed prizes to the competition winners. It also felicitated vocalist Ramesh Hebbar and guitar player Christopher Mascarenhas.
