With Christmas a fortnight away, the season's sentiments were reflected in the stamps on display at this month's Sunday exhibition by the Dakshina Kannada Philately and Numismatic Association (DKPNA) in Pandeshwar Head Post Office. Two members had brought more than 600 stamps with the Christmas theme. While Harriet Lasrado had brought 400 stamps, Irene Vaz had brought stamps.
The oldest stamps in her Christmas collection were from 1945, followed by stamps issued in 1953, 1958, and 1959. The stamps were about “the three kings”, “mother and child”, “Christmas Day”, “Santa Claus is coming to town” and “The spirit of Christmas”. Her collection had 400 stamps from 25 countries. “Sri Lanka brings many stamps on Christmas,” said Ms. Lasrado.
The other collection had stamps on Christmas carols, angels and Santa Claus. Ms. Vaz said that her collection had the highest number of stamps from Canada, followed by the U.S. Her collection had 45 sheets with at least six to sven (and up to 10) stamps on each sheet. The stamps included those on holly, poinsettia, the crib and the Xhristmas tree. Some stamps in her collection were from Cayman Islands and Antigua. As usual, there were dealers present at the meet and people could be seen trading in coins and philatelic material.
