University to hike salaries from April 1: Registrar

The Manipal University Mazdoor Union, affiliated to the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, on Thursday threatened to go an indefinite fast if the Manipal University failed to increase the salaries of its non-teaching staff on par with those given to the State government employees.

K.N. Purushotham, General Secretary of the Union, said on Thursday that he regretted the statement of the Registrar of Manipal University G.K. Prabhu terming the just demands of the Union, as “illegal” and “only for the sake of publicity”.

The Dearness Allowance of the non-teaching staff of the university had not been revised for the last 10 years. Mr. Prabhu’s reported statement only went to show that he did not understand the problems of the employees, he said.

“If the University does not respond positively to our demands at this meeting, we will sit on an indefinite fast,” Mr. Purushotham said.

The employees had already been informed that their salaries would be revised with effect from April 1, 2014.

The quantum of increase would be informed to the employees in a week.

“I have already held talks with them some days back,” he said.
