Manipal professor finishes Malaysian peninsula ride

During the 14-day expedition, Mr. Shammem visited over 20 cities, more than 20 regional councils and was able to raise nearly ₹5 lakh for the cause.

S.S.S. Shameem, assistant professor with Manipal International University, Malaysia, recently completed 2,000 km Malaysian peninsular ride in 14 days to create awareness and raise funds for children’s education.

Mr. Shameem told The Hindu it was a joint initiative of the university and Rotary Kasih.

He said, “The mission served as an awareness campaign to support Rotary Kasih project, a student life transformation programme.”

Having aimed at repeating his earlier successful attempts of solo cycling, he began the mainland Malaysia ride on July 27 focussing on spreading awareness about the Rotary programme and help raise funds.

During the 14-day expedition, Mr. Shammem visited over 20 cities, more than 20 regional councils and was able to raise nearly ₹5 lakh for the cause.

He had done several solo cycling expeditions while working as assistant professor in computer applications at Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal. Now working with Manipal Internatioal University, Nilai, Malaysia, for two years, Mr. Shameem has put his vast experience in riding, including endurance cycling, to use for the recent expedition covering an average of 125 km a day.
