Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes students pursuing doctoral studies at Mangalore University have been given laptops while a special grant of Rs. 1.45 crore has been allocated for the welfare of SC/ST students, said T.C. Shivashankar Murthy, Vice-Chancellor of the University, here on Wednesday.
Prof. Murthy told presspersons here on Wednesday that by distributing laptops to 36 Ph.D SC/ST students, Mangalore University became the first university in the country to do so.
The special grant would be used for providing hostel facilities, subsidising education for students, creating a book bank, creating opportunities for these students to pursue research abroad, and other facilities, he said.

Prof. Murthy announced that a two-day national conference on yoga therapy would be held on the university campus on January 18 and 19. “Most conferences tend to be academic, whereas this will be practical too. Sessions on practising Yoga to relieve asthma, diabetes and other ailments will be conducted,” he said.
The conference would be inaugurated by State Minister for Higher Education and district in-charge Minister C.T. Ravi.
