Writer and former Vice Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi, B.A. Vivek Rai said the book “Mangalore Darshana” will give a human perspective to the history and the heritage of Mangalore.
“Unlike a gazetteer filled with statistics, we will be presenting a human perspective to the city’s heritage, culture and history,” he said.
Mr. Rai said the book, to come out in six volumes, would bring out indigenous characters of people of the region that will be a source of inspiration to the present generation.

Mr. Rai said Mr. Nandavar and Mr. Moodubelle have already started interviewing elderly persons. “We are meeting persons who narrated to us historical facts about city and its development that they have seen. Mr. Nandavar and Mr. Moodubelle have been busy in it,” said Mr. Rai.
In the meeting, Mr. Rai asked representative from the Ports Department to provide copies of document about the Mangalore Port available since its formation in 1956. This town has been known as Port Town in ancient scripts available in German and Arabic languages, he said. The Deputy Director of Land Records and the Mangalore City Corporation were also asked to provide old documents and maps. “We will also be interested in meeting retired government personnel who have personal knowledge about our history and developments,” Mr. Rai said.

Mr. Rai said there has been good response from several Catholic families in the city who possess documents and photographs related to developments in the past.
The Deputy Commissioner asked departments to identify personnel from their departments who can act as nodal persons in providing information necessary to bring out the book.
