Man arrested on the charge of molestation

A man was arrested on Friday for allegedly molesting a 20-year-old woman after he followed her from the market to her house in Vittal Police Station limits.

According to the police, the woman, a III year nursing student, was walking home from the market around 10 a.m., when the accused, Sharif Khader, allegedly followed her.

At an isolated location in the path, he stopped her and attempted to pull her to the side, they said. When the woman started to scream, he ran away, said the police. Sharif was arrested and remanded to 15 days in judicial custody.

Dies in accident

A man was killed after a head-on collision with a lorry at Kootleu bridge on NH 75 Friday noon. Around 12 p.m., Shivakumar, who was driving the car towards Bangalore, crashed into the lorry that was headed in the opposite direction, said the Puttur Traffic Police. He suffered serious injuries and died later in the evening.

Sand seized

A total of 15 loads of sand, which were reportedly being stored to be transported illegally to Kerala, were seized by revenue officials at Nettinage village, Puttur taluk on Friday.

According to revenue officials, the loads of sand were being illegally stockpiled for the day and would have been taken across the border to Kerala barely two km away. Revenue Inspector Kunjai Rai said four persons – Babu Poojary, Ashraf, Sharif, Abdulla – will be named as the accused in a complaint to be submitted before the Puttur Rural Police Station on Saturday.

The raid, which involved the Deputy Commissioner and tahsildar, is part of the “continuing” effort to crack-down on transportation of sand across the border, said the revenue inspector.

Bus knocks down motorcyclist

Udupi Special Correspondent writes:

A person who was driving a motorcycle was killed when he was knocked down by a bus coming from the opposite direction at Kurkal village coming under the Shirva police station limits on Friday.

According to the police, Shashank Poojary (24) was riding his motorcycle and was behind a private bus moving from Udupi to Shirva. This bus stopped at Salmar Inchara Bus Stand to take in passengers. Shashank was trying to overtake the bus, when another private bus came from the opposite direction and hit him. Shashank, who fell from the motorcycle, suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot. A case has been registered at the Shirva police station and investigations were on, the police said.
