After more than two months of alternative conflict resolution, the number of cases disposed by the Dakshina Kannada Legal Services Authority (DKLSA) during their Lok Adalat drive has fallen way shot of its target.
From September 2, nearly 150 sittings distributed across all five taluks of the district were conducted until September 23.
Though the High Court set a target of around 5,000 cases to be disposed during this period, the Dakshina Kannada Legal Services Authority could manage 1,663.

“The target for us was too high, and we cut it half to 2,500 cases. Even then, due to some bureaucratic issues, not many cases could be disposed off,” said Mangalore Bar Association president P. Ashok Ariga. Among the reasons stated for the shortfall is the late intimation to banks and insurance companies here to present their cases.
This is reflected in pre-litigation cases (where only legal notice has been sent) where just 89 cases were disposed.
“The National Legal Services Authority may have sent the intimation late to banks and insurance companies. They got cases late, and not many such cases came forward or even if they did come to the Adalat, they could not be disposed off within the time frame,” said Mr. Ariga.

However, he said the disposal rate among the nearly 5,000 cases that had come up was “very good”.
The cases had been tried at the sittings conducted informally on the court premises after court hours.
