In a closely fought contest, a two-member team of Class 8 students from Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar, emerged winners of the 18th edition of The Hindu Young World Quiz here on Monday.
Team I of Vidyodaya School, Udupi, was the first runners-up, while the team from Sharada Vidyalaya, Mangaluru, was the second runners-up. The winning team, comprising Prabhav Shetty and Karan P. Hathwar, secured 89 points, while Dhiren Bhandary and Chandan Prakash secured 88 points. The second runners-up team of Pradhyumna Upadhya and Pannaga Bhat finished with 87 points.
When the last question was posed, the team from Little Rock Indian School led with 89 points, followed by Sharada Vidyalaya with 87 points. Team I of Vidyodaya School had secured 73 points while Team II of the same school, comprising Suhas and Anirudha, had 71 points. The Besant English-Medium School team of Thejas J.D. and Shreedhar A. Sherlekar had 44 points, while the Canara CBSE School team of Pratham D. Shetty and B. Adithya Holla had 49 points.

When the quiz master, V.V. Ramanan, asked the final question — “Who did Gandhi take as political guru on his return to India?” — Team I of Vidyodaya School went for the buzzer. The team answered “Gopalakrishna Gokhale” and earned 15 points to finish second.
Fast start
The winning team members, Mr. Shetty and Mr. Hathwar, said earning only one negative point was what propelled them to the finish line. The team had a good start to the quiz, earning 42 points by guessing correctly the image of P.V. Sindhu that was hidden on the screen.

As many as 170 teams from schools in Mangaluru, Udupi, Sullia, Puttur and Moodbidri participated. After the preliminary round, the best six teams qualified for the finals.
Expert Group of Institutions vice-chairperson Usha Prabha N. Nayak and State Bank of India’s deputy general manager Sukumar gave away the prizes.
The competition was held at the Mijar Govinda Pai Memorial Hall of Canara High School, Mannagudda. It was presented by State Bank of India and powered by Eveready Industries India Ltd. Arrow Publication was the knowledge partner. The Centre For Advanced Learning (CFAL), South Canara District Central Cooperative Bank, and Saree & Gold Palace were the regional partners, while Vismaya Water and Amusement Park, Kannur, was the gift voucher partner.
