Konkani Natak Sabha begins compilation of Konkani plays

Repository of plays staged in the last 100 years soon

The Konkani Natak Sabha on Sunday initiated the process of compilation of Konkani plays. This compilation of Konkani plays will form part of the ‘Konkani Natak Bhandar’.

Initiative

The sabha, which has been staging plays for over seven decades, has taken initiative to form repository of Konkani plays that have been staged in the last 100 years.

Manuscripts

Felix Sequeira, the convenor of the sabha, said they will be collecting manuscripts of the plays — some of which are old ones and are difficult to read. They will be compiling these plays and bring them out in the form of a book. This compilation will be done in a methodical way by complying with the copyright norms, he said.

Preserving plays

In a formal function on Sunday, Stephan Mascarenhas, editor of Daijiworld Weekly and writer, expressed the need to preserve the good old Konkani plays for the younger generation.

There were a number of plays available in different Konkani dialects. He appreciated the lead taken by the Nataka Sabha in creating a repository. Mr. Mascarenhas said seven of his plays will also form part of the repository.

Playwrights Dolphy Lobo, who has written as many as 25 Konkani plays, and Christopher D’Souza, who runs a theatre group, also spoke at the function.
