A wing commander who traces his roots to the district is one among the nine crew members killed in the Mi-17 V5 Indian Air Force chopper crash during a rescue mission in flood-hit Uttarakhand on Tuesday.
Darryl Castelino (38) originally from Kinnigoli, shifted along with his family to Mumbai, where he received most of his education, said a family friend.
While his deceased father Herald Castelino is from Kadri in the city, his mother Leena is from Bajpe. The family currently resides in Vakola in Santa Cruz. Mr. Castelino leaves behind Jyothi, his wife, and his two children, Ethan (7) and Angelina (4), said the family friend.

The friend told The Hindu that the body had not yet reached Kolkata - he was posted in Barrackpore Air Force Station in West Bengal under the Eastern Air Command – from Uttarakhand due to heavy rain. Mr. Castelino’s family has gone to Kolkata in an attempt to get the body to Mumbai where he will be buried in the local church.
“The funeral may happen on Friday,” said the friend.
