Keerthanas cast a spell on students

The theme of the series was "contemporary debate on the compositions of Kanakadasa".

When a group of college students sang Tallanisadiru kandya talu manave , a popular composition of poet saint Kanakadasa, at a college hall here on Wednesday it brought out its essence which suggested for having patience in life.

The students went on to sing nanu neenu ennadiru heena manava , another composition of the 16 century ‘dasa’, which stressed on equality.

Aatma yava kula, jeeva yava kula the third ‘keerthana’ sung by students dealt with identity crisis faced by people in life.

Many students gathered at the Rosario Cultural Hall, Pandeshwar, to witness the inauguration of a series of 15 lectures on Kanakadasa organised by the Centre for Research on Kanakadasa, Mangalore University. The theme of the series was “contemporary debate on the compositions of Kanakadasa”.

Rosario College of Management Studies, Pandeshwar, had hosted the inaugural address of the series by Kannada writer Hampa Nagarajaiah. There was no lighting of the lamp. The singing of the song Tallanisadiru kandya talu manave marked the inaugural session.

Mr. Nagarajaiah said in his address that Kanakadasa through his work “Nala Charitre” had dealt on aspects applicable to all in life. In the same work he had dealt on endurance of a woman in marital life. In his ‘keerthanas’ Kanakadasa had reflected the life of the 16th century and the mystic experience he had in life, he said.

Principal of the college Alwyn Serrao said that Tallanisadiru kandya talu manave had been translated into Konkani.
