It seeks increase in staff strength, better facilities

The District Government Hospital in Udupi.

The Karavali Youth Club demanded that the District Government Hospital here should be upgraded so that better facilities could be provided to poor patients.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, club president Ashok said though in 2001 the government had said that the taluk hospital would be upgraded as a district hospital, only the board had changed and not the facilities. The staff strength continues to be for 124 beds that it had as a taluk hospital, he said.

Besides a shortage of doctors, nurses and Group ‘D’ employees, the lack of infrastructure, including facilities for emergency treatment, should be considered a serious limitation, he said.

Health and Family Welfare Minister B. Sriramalu will visit the hospital on September 28, during which the club will submit a memorandum in this regard.

P.V. Bhandary, psychiatrist, said the district hospital had not been upgraded for want of funds, and he urged the State government to put pressure on the Centre to get the required funds released.

He said philanthropists could try to raise some money, like they had done a few years ago.
