‘Kanakadasa had had connection with Udupi’

Vishwesha Tirtha Swami of Paryaya Pejawar Mutt said on Wednesday that unnecessary confusion should not be created about the relationship between the saint-philosopher-composer Sri Kanakadasa and the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple.

Responding to queries from presspersons that there was confusion on whether a particular composition, “Bagilanu teredu”, by Sri Kanakadasa referred to the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple in Udupi here, the seer said that in a Kannada film, the song was attributed to Udupi. But the composition might refer to Melukote or Udupi. “I do not want to debate it. But there are enough evidence to show that Sri Kanakadasa had connection with Udupi,” he said.

1963 book

The seer said that a book printed in 1963 had given enough evidence of Sri Kanakadasa’s connection with Udupi. It had details of Sri Kanakadasa visiting Udupi and the idol of Sri Krishna “turning” for him (Sri Kanakadasa). It was printed to celebrate the 400th birth anniversary of Sri Kanakadasa. “But we will have to search for that book,” he said.

Vishwesha Tirtha quoted a composition written by the seer Sri Vadiraja of Sode Mutt written 400 years ago, which, he said, brought out clearly the relation between Sri Kanakadasa and Udupi. He also quoted a composition, “Mayada shishuva nodi”, written by Sri Kanakadasa, which, he said, clearly brought out the relationship of Lord Krishna of Udupi and Sri Vadiraja.

“Hence, there is no confusion between about the relation between Sri Kanakadasa and Lord Krishna of Udupi,” he said.
