Thieves broke into a jewellery shop at Kabettu in Karkala town and made away with gold and silver ornaments, estimated at Rs. 17.75 lakh Wednesday night.

According to the police, thieves broke into Santosh Jewellers by making a hole in its wall. After getting into the shop, they used gas cutters to open the safe. They decamped with 600 grams of gold ornaments and 1.5 kg of silver ornaments kept in the safe.

The thieves also damaged the closed circuit television camera (CCTV) and the DVR recording box was missing. “We are trying to trace the DVR recording box,” said Karkala Circle Police Inspector Valentine D’Souza. But the thieves had left behind a gas cutter. A team of fingerprint experts and a dog squad was pressed into service. The police had foiled a robbery bid at a jewellery shop (Sri Lakshmi Gold Works) in Karkala town on Tuesday night and arrested three persons involved in it, while three more are absconding.

Within 24 hours of that robbery bid, a theft had taken place in a jewellery shop sending a wave of fear among the jewellery shop owners in the town.

“While the incident of Tuesday night was the handiwork of local miscreants, the Wednesday night incident appears to have been done by outsiders, Mr. D’Souza said.
