Heavy rain in Dakshina Kannada: three electrocuted, power supply hit

Power supply severely affected; MESCOM suffers Rs. 10 crore loss

As rain and gusty winds continued unabated, three persons were electrocuted in two incidents in Puttur taluk on Monday. In the first incident, Chandra (30) and Kaushik (21) died at Anchinadka in Kumbra section of MESCOM while they were carrying a wooden log from the forest, Puttur Rural Police said.

According to Executive Engineer, Puttur, Narayan Poojary, the deaths were due to grounding after an 11-kV insulator got punctured due to heavy wind.

Babu (61) was electrocuted in Bhaktakodi village in Puttur Rural Police limits. Mr. Poojary said that Babu was reportedly trying to remove a tree branch from an electrical line.

Police have registered cases of unnatural death. MESCOM Managing Director Chikkananjappa a that statutory compensation would be paid to the kin of the deceased. The gusty winds blowing, at times, between 45 kmph and 55 kmph, accompanied by heavy rain, in the last one week have hit electricity infrastructure in the coastal and Malnad regions. Thousands of electricity poles have got uprooted and hundreds of transformers damaged.
