Gram panchayat member arrested

A team of Kerala police on Wednesday arrested Premalatha (35), president of Ananthady Gram Panchayat, for allegedly cheating a Bangalore-based businessman, who is the general secretary of the Janata Dal (Secular).

According to Vittal police, Venkatesh Murthy, Janata Dal (S) general secretary, had filed a complaint with the Kannur police that Premalatha had assured him of getting gold at a cheaper rate from her contacts in Kannur. She gained confidence of Mr. Murthy by arranging gold for Rs. 5 lakh. She took Rs. 29 lakh from Mr. Murthy and failed to arrange gold. The complaint was lodged on August 19.

The Vittal Police accompanied the Kerala police team in arresting Ms. Premalatha.

Arrest

The Mangalore city police arrested two persons allegedly involved in selling narcotic substance near a medical college hostel in Bejai on Wednesday. The police gave the names of the accused as Ashraf (40) of Manjeshwar and Prashant (25) of Kodikal. The police have recovered 480 grams of ganja, 300 grams of brown sugar, and two mobile phones.
