Govt. approves phase III action plan

Rs. 50 cr. for road projects over Rs. 2 cr. for Thumbe work

Installing street lights on National Highway 66 from National Institute of Technology–Karnataka at Surathkal to Nanthoor Junction, constructing market buildings at Kankanady and Kavoor, and building a zonal office of the Mangalore City Corporation at Surathkal are some of the 168 projects the civic body has proposed to take up with the Rs. 100-crore government grant.

The State government gave “in-principle approval” to the action plan of 168 projects on March 1, 2014, said to Ajith Kumar Hegde S, Commissioner of the corporation.

The Hindu , said that the Chief Minister while presenting the Budget for 2013-14 on July 12, 2013 announced of sanctioning Rs. 1,000 crore to 10 city corporations, as Rs. 100 crore each, as the third stage grant.

It said that the Mangalore City Corporation placed the action plan for the third stage grant in a meeting presided by the district in-charge on December 13, 2013, and got approval for it.

The action plan has reserved Rs. 50 lakh each for installing street lights on the highway and for constructing a market building at Kavoor. It has allotted Rs. 3 crore each for constructing a market a Kankanady and extending/developing the head office of the civic body at Lalbagh.

Rs. 2.25 crore has been reserved for constructing a zonal office building of the corporation at Surathkal.

More than half of the grant — that is Rs. 55 crore — has been reserved for taking up 101 road projects. It has proposed to develop two model roads — that is from Lady Hill Circle to Koragajjana Gudi (at a cost Rs. 1.90 crore) and from Kankanady Circle to Retreat House (Rs. 2 crore).

It has proposed to concrete the stretch from Badriya College Junction to Neereshwalya School Junction and concrete the fourth cross road at Bejai-Kappikkad.

The action plan has proposed to lay high density polythene water supply pipelines between Durga Mahal Junction in Mannagudda to Car Street (Rs. 25 lakh), Gandhakadu to Bondel Junction (Rs. 25 lakh), and from Padil to Jeppinamogaru (Rs. 50 lakh). It has reserved Rs. 2.05 crore for repair/electricity work at Thumbe pumping station at which supplies drinking water to the city.
