Higher Education Minister V.S. Acharya on Saturday directed the officials to give priority to road repairs ahead of the Paryaya festival to be held here on January 18, 2012. He was presiding over the tri-monthly Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) review meeting, here.

Dr. Acharya said that tourists would not only attend the Paryaya festival but also visit other tourist spots in the district. Hence, it was necessary that all major roads and national highways in the district be repaired in time. Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda will be urged to release special grants for repairs of the roads.

Commissioner of Udupi City Municipal Council Gokuldas Nayak said that tenders had been issued for repair of roads in all 35 wards of Udupi city at a cost of Rs. 85 lakh. An additional grant of Rs. 3 crore was required for repairing the roads. The Minister directed Mr. Nayak to get all roads in the city repaired by the end of November. Twenty-four acres of land had been reserved for sites in the villages of Hirebettu, Kalathur, Belapu, Bairampalli, Hosur, Hombady, Mudady, and Kadtal in the district in the last three months. These sites would be provided to landless people. The encroachment on either side of State Highway to Kollur should be cleared, Dr. Acharya said.
