GHS, Sharavu roads to be widened

Mr. Gowda instructed the corporation officials to begin the process of widening Ganapathi High School (GHS) Road and Sharavu Temple Road from August 1 and Naguri-Mangalore Junction Railway Road from Saturday.

Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) will widen two narrow roads in the central business area of the city in a few days. In addition, it will widen a narrow road leading to Mangalore Junction Railway Station from Naguri.

Deputy Commissioner N.S. Channappa Gowda inspected the three roads along with corporation Commissioner Harish Kumar K. and some engineers on Friday.

Mr. Gowda instructed the corporation officials to begin the process of widening Ganapathi High School (GHS) Road and Sharavu Temple Road from August 1 and Naguri-Mangalore Junction Railway Road from Saturday. He directed them to acquire land for road-widening work under the provisions of transferrable development rights (TDR).

The 573-metre GHS Road links Hampankatta Junction-A.B. Shetty Circle Road and Sharavu Temple Road from in front of University College. The Deputy Commissioner told presspersons that it would be widened from 32 ft. to 50 ft. He said 31 pieces of property would have to be acquired. It included portions of 10 buildings, compound walls and parking area.

The 260-metre Sharavu Temple Road connects Karnad Sadashiva Rao Road and Venkatarama Temple Square. The Deputy Commissioner said that the road was between 12 ft. and 15 ft. wide. It would be widened to 40 ft. In all, portions of 16 buildings would have to be acquired.

The 360-metre Naguri-Mangalore Junction Railway Station Road connects the station with Mahaveera Circle-Padil Road. The Deputy Commissioner said that a 50-metre stretch from Naguri towards the station would be widened to 60 ft. and remaining stretch to 40 ft. As the railway station link road connected the busy Mahaveera Circle-Padil Road, it would have to be wide at Naguri. Portions of 11 buildings would have to be acquired, he said.

Mr. Kumar said that the process of widening the railway station road would start “immediately”.

The corporation commissioner said that the civic body had reserved Rs. 1 crore from the 13th Finance Commission grants for widening Bhawanti Street up to Venkatramana Temple Square. The road from Srinivasa cinema to Durga Mahal via Kudroli, which is being widened now, would be concreted at an estimated cost of Rs. 11 crore.

Executive Engineer (Development Cell) G. Rajashekar, and Assistant Executive Engineer K.S. Linge Gowda were among those present.
